Iron(II) phthalocyanine was adsorbed to carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to produce an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) active CNT catalyst. Pyrolysis resulted in Fe-N-nanographene moieties well-adhered to CNT surfaces. The catalyst exhibited half-wave potentials of 0.79 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode in oxygen-saturated 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. The catalyst showed one of the highest ORR activity reported, Fe-N-C CNT-based catalysts.
