Gold nanoparticle vesicles (AuNVs) with hollow structures and special optical properties have been extensively explored in medicinal chemistry for their potential applications as drug delivery system (DDS), photothermal therapy. Thus, design and fabrication of nanoparticle vesicles, especially, multi-layered AuNVs with mutiple plasmon coupling in a controlled manner is in high demand.
In this poster, we presented the layered vesicle-like assembly of binary mixtures of small (15 nm) and large (30 nm) gold nanoparticles (GNPs) in the presence of a glucose-terminated fluorinated oligo(ethylene glycol) ligand in solution. SEM and STEM images (Figure 1a and 1b) indicated that the outermost layer of the structure was formed of 15 nm GNPs, with the 30 nm GNPs selectively located inside. Interestingly, the layered vesicle-like assembly gave two plasmonic peaks located at ~ 550 nm and ~ 700 nm respectively in the UV-vis extinction spectra (Figure 1c). Time course study of UV-vis and STEM images demonstrated that the new plasmonic peak (~ 700 nm) was originated from the spherical layered vesicle-like assembly. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling of the layered vesicle-like structure also gave a similar UV-vis extinction spectra to the experimental results.
