We review the stimulus-response behavior of liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) and gels which possess both liquid crystallinity and rubber elasticity. We introduce the thermally induced bending and twist deformations of the LCEs with controlled director alignments, the large electro-mechanical effects in LCEs with polydomain alignments, and the electro-opto-mechanical effects in cholesteric gels.
