[14a-3A-8] Label-free monitoring of amyloid β aggregation using polymer-based photonic crystal

In this study, label-free monitoring of amyloid β (Aβ) (1-42) aggregation using polymer-based two-dimensional photonic crystal (2D-PhC) was successfully performed. Senile plaques are extracellular Aβ deposits found in the brains of Altzheimer’s disease patients. Aβ kinetics and its aggregation are now believed to play an essential role in Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis. In order to monitor its aggregation kinetics, it is conventional to apply fluorescence-based assay using thioflavin T (ThT). However, the fluorescence-based assay has several disadvantages such as complicated liquid handling and low sensitivity. To overcome these disadvantages, in this study, polymer-based two-dimensional photonic crystal (PhC) was used for label-free monitoring of Aβ aggregation kinetics.
