Layered sodium cobaltite (NaxCoO2) is known as a high performance thermoelectric material and is also expected to be a promising cathode material for sodium ion secondary batteries. Various properties of NaxCoO2 are highly dependent on crystal orientation as a result of its layered structure. Control of crystal alignment is therefore important when it is used in the polycrystalline form. Meanwhile, magnetic alignment is a powerful method to control crystal alignment of polycrystals composed of anisotropic crystals like NaxCoO2. Here, we report the synthesis of NaxCoO2 and results of magnetic alignment experiments performed by slip casting of a suspension containing NaxCoO2 crystals under a magnetic field of up to 4T.
