The maximum heat flux of thermal radiation is limited in general by the Stefan-Boltzmann’s law but far more heat flux can be transferred by the evanescent wave coupling across two bodies placed in close proximity. We proposed a technique to produce submicron gaps and characterized the heat flux with an intention to use the near-field phenomena for thermophotovoltaic devices as well as thermal management. The developed technology is also useful to improve the heat flux of the authors’ radiative thermal rectifier that has the world largest rectification ratio of 3:1.
