[13a-A25-6] [INVITED] Self-Assembly and Functions of Zwitterionic Polymers at the Air/Water Interface

Nanostructure of zwitterionic polybetaine brush at the air/water interface was investigated by X-ray reflectivity. The block copolymer of polybetaine and hydrophobic block forms monolayer on the water surface and polybetaine brush was formed just beneath the water surface. The polybetaine layer composed of carpet and brush layers, and brush layer thickness was found to be increased by salt addition. This observation is opposite trend to that for ionic polymer brush. Ion specific effect of this salt effect was duly investigated.
