Here we briefly review the history of the development of the atomic-scale measurement techniques in liquids using atomic force microscopy (AFM). We also introduce the trend of the present development of the advanced AFM techniques. In addition, we present applications of these atomic-scale AFM measurement techniqes to the subjects in various academic and industrial research fields. Based on the examples, we discuss the present status and the future prospects of such applications.
