[13p-D63-1] [INVITED] Controllable Protein Aggregation with Ultrasonic Irradiation for Early Diagnostics of Neurodegenerative Diseases

Transformation from monomers to aggregates in amyloidosis proteins is deeply related to pathogenic mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Acceleration of protein aggregation reaction is a long-running problem in the drug development and early diagnosis. We recently found that ultrasonic cavitation bubbles behave as catalysts for nucleation for aggregation of proteins; by optimizing ultrasonic frequency and pressure, the reaction-rate constant for aggregation is increased by nearly three-orders-of magnitudes for amyloid beta peptide, for example. In this talk, the ultrasonically accelerated protein aggregation is explained with its mechanism, and its application to the early diagnostics is discussed.
