Keywords:liquid crystal, bimesomorphism, phase transition

A novel liqudi crystalline system we found that exhibits a bimesomorphism in which phase transitions take place between SmA and Col phases for one chemical structure in both thermotropic and photonic ways (hexa-alkoxyazobenzene-substituted triphenylene, 1-Cn: n= the number of carbon atomes in a alkyl chain) were studied with both POM and XRD techniques on their phase transitions for the aligned films on glass and polyimide-coated substrates. It was indicated that in the SmA phase, 1-C12 and 1-C14 take lath-like and rod-like shape of molecules as a stable conformer, respectively. This is an interesting feature that could significantly relate to their functional properties.
