Novel pi-extended naphthalene dimide with one fused thiphene ring, namely, naphtho[2,3-b]thiophenediimide (NTI) was synthesized, and characterized its molecular and packing structure as well as electronic structure. Taking advantage of the mono-functionalizeability of the NTI unit at the thiophene arpha-position, a simple dimer of NTI or a trimer with a benzene core, as potential n-type organic semiconductors, were easily derived. In fact, these extended NTI derivatives were functioned as n-type semiconductors in thin-film transistors or photovoltaic cells.
