In the present study, we prepared several molecular nanostructures, as precursors of nanocarbons such as nitrogen-doped graphene, on gold surface by solvent evaporation method. We employed vacuum-deposited Au/mica films as substrates. The substrates were flame-annealed in order to crystallize into Au(111) before use. Melamine and some reactant molecules were dissolved in ultrapure water. The sample solutions were applied onto the Au(111) substrate with heating by hotplate. The chemical reactions and solvent evaporations were simultaneously occurred by the heating process. During heating, we paid special attention to avoid temperature fluctuation by air convection. The products were observed by scanning tunneling microscopy at room temperature. In the case of melamine-terephthalaldehyde reacted and evaporated at 80°C, the covalent-bonded molecular networks were observed. The networks have several distinct phases corresponding to various extent of the reactions and molecular arrangements. On the other hand, it is difficult to observe the stable networks in the case of melamine-formaldehyde. We believed that the evaporation of formaldehyde was predominant in the present experimental condition.
