[15p-P5-5] Spatial distributions of temperature and velocity of metal particles in atmospheric plasma spray

Temperature, velocity and size distribution of droplets are important parameters to be monitored in thermal spray processing, in which the droplets form coating layers on various materials for various purposes, such as anti-corrosion and anti-wear layers. In this study, spatial distributions of the temperature and velocity of metal droplets produced by atmospheric plasma spray gun were measured successfully by a recently-developed method that is combined a ‘two-color’ thermometry with a ‘time-of-flight’ technique. It was found that spatial distribution of the temperature of the droplets just after the exit (50 mm) of the plasma spray gun had low temperature (~2,500 K) region in the center and high temperature (~3,000 K) region in the surroundings. On the other hand, at the 150 mm that was the most suitable position known from experience for forming coating layers, the spatial distributions of temperature and velocity were found to become uniform as 2,700~3,000 K and 70 m/s, respectively.
