Effects of the front surface field (FSF) layers consisting of stacked n-type and i-type a-Si:H films on back contacted heterojunction silicon solar cells have been studied by simulation and experiments. The cell having no n-layer showed big difference in its external quantum efficiency spectra depending on with or without white bias light, in contrast to the 10 nm-thick n-layer cell. The conversion efficiency of the no n-layer cell decreased with the decrease of light intensity below 0.2 sun and therefore FSF is effective for low illumination.
