Semiconductors are one of the promising candidate materials for mid-IR transmission. Germanium-core, borosilicate glass-cladded fibers were drawn in a laboratory-fabricated mini-draw tower at 1000°C using the ‘rod in tube’ technique. Transmission electron microscopy studies showed that oxygen and silicon diffusion from the glass cladding to the Ge core was minimal presumably due to the relatively low drawing temperature. Infrared transmission through the fiber was examined in the range of 5.75-6.3 μm using a quantum cascade laser, and the transmission losses of the fiber were found 3-8 dB/cm.
