Keywords:fine particle size measurement

The measurement of fine particle size is important in spray systems, minimum quantity lubrication, and weather observation. Introducing the recent progress of image processing techniques and commercial cameras, the authors developed a portable measurement system that overcame the large light intensity difference between the incident laser light and diffracted light and the limitation of the dynamic range of imaging devices. In the developed portable measurement system, however, the video recording image taken by the commercial camera should be copied to PC after the video recording and the image-processing from an image to a particle size took 0.2 s much longer than the frame advance time, 0.03 s.
In this paper the authors propose the new particle-size measurement method that enables the real-time measurement of the particle size during the video recording.
