The luminescence properties of red long lasting phosphorescence (LLP) of Zn3(PO4)2 : Mn2+ were investigated. The sample, prepared by baking at 1223 K on a quartz boat under a H2 / Ar ( 0.5 / 99.5, v/v ) atmosphere, was likely a thick film in shape and exhibited bright and red LLP compared to that of powdery sample.A SEM observation of the sample provided the surface morphology with terraces of 200 mm long x 100 mm wide.Upon irradiating UV light continuously, the LLP intensity was gradually increased with a rise time of 10s.When cooled it down, the phosphorescence maximum was shifted from 613 nm at 500 K to 626 nm at 80 K in contrast to that of usual semiconductors. The LLP lifetime was determined to be 157s at ambient temperature and 62s at 80K. The non-phosphorescent sample at 80K after UV irradiation exhibited the red phosphorescence again upon infrared radiation.
