Precise control of molecular alignment in soft materials in one or more dimensions enables to amplify nanoscale molecular functions to macroscale materials properties. Although ones of the most practical and general methods for alignment control are a mechanical and a photochemical method, there exist no method having the versatility of applicable materials and the high degree of freedom of processing, which limits the number of applications of soft materials. Here we report a novel photoalignment control by means of photopolymerization, in which the intensity of actinic light are controlled spatiotemporally and molecular diffusion are induced depending on the intensity changes. We successfully fabricated polymer films having two-dimensional molecular alignment by diffusion.
