We have proposed a new photovoltaic system in which specially designed silicon photovoltaic cells are illuminated by solar-pumped lasers emitting at 1.06 um. We fabricated the silicon cells equipped with a light-trapping structure consisting of a front bandpass filter and a back diffuse reflector using thin etched wafers. The quantum efficiency under monochromatic illumination at 1.06 um, which is very close to the absorption edge of silicon, was as high as 0.8-0.9, although the wafer thickness was only 50 um. The series resistance and Auger recombination scarcely affected, up to 20 W/cm2 of illumination intensity.
