We successfully fabricated a porous microneedle array, which is painless and less invasive, for fast interstitial fluid monitoring for the first time. Porous polymer is synthesized from a monomer glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) mixed with a porogen polyethylene- glycol (PEG) by photo polymerization. Porous microneedles are fabricated via a micromoulding process using a PDMS mold. Using the colored agarose gel, it was shown that these porous microneedles have a high water absorption speed according to the capillary action. Using the pig skin, we found that the microneedles are strong enough to insert into the skin. From the scanning electron microscopy images, the pore size in the microneedles is about 1 μm. The porous microneedles are also expected to be used for drug delivery and interstitial fluid monitoring.
