Optically-detected magnetic resonance with nitrogen vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond is a promising approach for nanoscale magnetic field imaging as well as quantum computation. The precision of NV spin-state readout, however, is limited by the optical diffraction. Here we present new methods for imaging and controlling NV centers by use of magnetic field gradients. This technique enables nanoscale mapping and selective control of proximal NV centers.
