Binding of amphiphilic molecules (lipopolysaccharide or cholesterol-modified gelatin) to supported lipid bilayers results in lipid fibril extension or bilayer area expansion. Fibril extension occurs for confined bilayers, while area expansion is observed for unconfined bilayers. When an unconfined bilayer patch consists of a broad bilayer segment with a long thin streak, area expansion mainly occurs within the bilayer streak. In this presentation, we talk about the mechanism of fibril generation and the driving force for the non-uniform expansion of bilayer patches.
