[20p-P4-2] Coupled-wave analysis for photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers II

キーワード:photonic crystal surface-emitting lasers,photonic crystals,laser theory
Optical loss mechanisms within a photonic crystal surface-emitting laser (PCSEL) with external reflection, whereby the lasing (zeroth-order) mode within the embedded two-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) slab of the laser is reflected from the boundaries of the PC, are studied semi-analytically using three-dimensional coupled-wave theory (3DCWT). Results reveal that light emitted from the boundaries of the PC increases at certain reflection phases that depend on the position of the air hole within the unit cell of the PC, and that this increase occurs over a wide range (up to ~0.90) of boundary reflectivities. This dependence is seen in PCs for both circular (symmetrical) and triangular (asymmetrical) air holes. Meanwhile, light emitted from the surface of the PC is proportional to mode frequency, which is also seen to depend on external reflection.
