High coverage two-dimensional (2D) arrays of gold nano-particles (AuNPs) smaller than 10 nm in size can easily be formed by covering their surfaces with a single alkanethiol self-assembled monolayer (SAM). However, it becomes difficult for AuNPs larger than 10 nm in size, because of their colloidal dispersion instability. This problem is resolved by forming a mixed alkanethiol SAM on AuNP surfaces. In this presentation, we will report the relationship between the composition ratio of the mixed SAMs and the coverage of Au colloidal films.
