We studied spin torque oscillators having an in-plane magnetized free layer and a perpendicularly magnetized reference layer under various magnetic field angles. Out-of-plane precession was excited at a large bias voltage and changed to in-plane precession when a magnetic field exceeded a critical value. The critical magnetic field increased monotonically with changing magnetic field angle from the in-plane to out-of-plane direction. However, the in-plane component of the critical magnetic field became a constant value. These experimental results are well explained by macrospin analyses.
