Electric-field control of magnetic anisotropy is an important subject in spintronics research. Applying an electric field to BaTiO3 makes it possible to tune the lattice volume by modulating the domain structures along the a- and c-axis directions. Electric-field control of the magnetic properties of Ni/Cu multilayers on BaTiO3 was achieved, in which the magnetization switches from perpendicular to the in-plane magnetic easy axes. We have developed a novel technique of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) under an applied electric field in NiCu/BaTiO3 to clarify the mechanism of the electric-field-induced changes in the magnetic anisotropy.
