Improvement on the labor productivity for infrastructure maintenance is an urgent issue for most of the local governments in Japan to suppress the total costs. We state that the X-ray backscatter imaging is one of the best methods to visualize inside the concrete structure with sufficient spatial resolution, so that detailed information is obtained, which has not been done before. X-ray backscatter has both good properties of X-ray imaging; high-resolution, and of microwave radar; easy alignment. We report on the X-ray backscatter imaging system in inspecting roadbeds and bridges made of reinforced concrete with a cover depth up to 10 cm with the spatial resolution of a few mm.
