Highly-controlled conductance quantization is achieved in an Ag/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/Pt structure. Current–voltage measurements revealed reproducible quantized conductance below 10G0 under bias voltage sweep, where G0 corresponds to the conductance of a single-atom point contact (= 2e2/h). The Ag/PEO/Pt exhibited a conductance state distribution with distinct peaks of integer and half-integer multiples of G0 accompanied with small fractional variations. First-principles density functional theory simulations showed that the experimental observations could be explained by the existence of a tunneling gap and the structural rearrangement in an atomic point contact.
