Heat dissipation is a critical issue in single-atom and -molecule devices as electric current density becomes huge in the nanostructure under operation. Here we report on direct measurements of Joule heating in Au atomic wires. For this, we fabricated a nanosensor constructed with a free-standing Au junction and a thermometer on a polyimide-coated metal substrate. We found thermopower dependence in the local heating that signifies a distinct role of conducting electrons and holes on the energy dissipation.
