Polyelectrolyte brushes (PB) are attracting attention as a new surface functionalization method. Wettability of PB surface can be controlled by exchanging counter ions according to Hofmeister series. To understand the change of wettability at the molecular level, change of the hydrogen-bonding network of water molecules in the PB by counter ion exchange was observed by soft X-ray emission spectroscopy and the structure of the PB in the liquid is visualized by frequency modulation AFM.
