Donor-acceptor (D-A) type low-bandgap polymers (LBPs) have been intensively investigated as p-type semiconducting materials in organic photovoltaics (OPV). Isoindigo (IDG) and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) are ones of the strongest electron acceptors, and have been copolymerized with various donors. Previously, we have developed new LBPs with unsymmetric IDG and thienoisoindigo (TIDG), namely benzothienoisoindigo (BTIDG). As a result of the regiorandom nature of BTIDG copolymer, this molecular design achieved preferential face-on orientation of polymer backbone and high crystallinity, along with a good solubility. Having all that in mind, we designed unsymmetric DPP bearing benzene and thiophene (or thienothiophene). The details of the synthesis, optoelectronic properties, and OPV characteristics of these copolymers will be reported.
