To enable high-speed distributed strain/temperature measurement along optical fibers, we have developed a new configuration of Brillouin optical correlation-domain reflectometry (BOCDR)—named slope-assisted BOCDR (SA-BOCDR). Its basic operation has been investigated using both silica and plastic optical fibers, and besides, it has been proved that strained/heated sections even shorter than the nominal spatial resolution can be detected. Although this “beyond-nominal-resolution” effect is an attractive advantage for practical applications, the detection of strained/heated sections shorter than the current world record has not been demonstrated yet. Thus, in this work, by exploiting this special effect of SA-BOCDR, we demonstrate the detection of a 2- and 5-mm-long—shortest ever—strained and heated sections in the silica and plastic optical fibers and show that the usefulness of the beyond-nominal-resolution effect.
