Atomic- or molecular-level structural dynamics of materials under photoexcitation have been observed via time-resolve X-ray diffraction experiments with X-ray free electron lasers. Here, one of the important techniques should be highly-precise determination of the arrival time of optical and X-ray pulses at the sample position (time-zero). The time-zero determination method using nonthermal melting of Bi will be given in the presentation.
