Optical flow algorithms are widely for estimating volumetric flow in fluids, cited in hundreds of papers. However, major limitations in their accuracy have gone unnoticed. Contrary to the existing literature, existing implementations of optical flow algorithms to volumetric fluids cannot by themselves provide reliable estimates of the volumetric flow. We illustrate each of these problems with simple thought experiments, simulation, and experimental data.
