[7p-C24-19] Synthesis of low valent titanium using sodium tetrahydroborate
Keywords:titanium
Titanium has been widely used for various products due to its superior properties such as lightness, toughness, and corrosion resistance. However, the production of pure titanium has the disadvantage that it needs a high temperature (more than 900 oC) for the reaction and a strong reduction agent such as Mg to reduce titanium(IV). In this study, we have developed a new synthesis to obtain low valent titanium nanoparticles at relatively low temperature by the reduction of titanium(IV) chloride. Sodium tetrahydroborate was slowly added to a solution of titanium(Ⅳ) chloride. After 72 hours, the color of the mixture slowly changed from yellow to dark brown. This indicates that the valent of titanium changed from four to two or less. The color of this dark brown solution slowly changed to pale yellow under air.
