Optical metamaterials are science and technology to control the optical properties of materials by using man-made subwavelength structures. To date, almost all optical metamaterials consist of small metal structures and thay use local-mode surface plasmon resonance to realize strong light-matter interaction. In such optical metamaterials, due to the intrinsic losses of metals such as ohmic loss, it is impossible to eliminate the light absorption completely. In this presentation, as a metamaterial that utilises metal losses, recent progresses on metamaterials absorber will be presented. As an application of IR metamaterial absorbers, high sensitive molecular detection technique using resonant coupling between metamaterial and molecule is proposed and attomole level sensitivity is demonstrated. As an application of absorption engineering by metamaterial in the visible range, ink-free full color printing with controllable color attributes like hue, brightness and saturation is also demonstrated.
