[8a-C24-2] Photodoping of silver deposited on bulk tellurite glass

We have studied the behavior of incorporation of silver into various glasses; the silver is deposited on the glasses. In this study, the incorporation of silver into a tellurite glass (20ZnO-80TeO2) was investigated. The Ag-deposited tellurite glasses were heat-treated at a temperature lower than Tg with or without UV-irradiation. The transmission spectrum of the Ag-deposited glass drastically changed only after the heat-treatment under the UV-irradiation while the spectra of the glasses hardly changed by the heat-treatment or the UV-irradiation individually. In addition, absorption attributable to silver nanoparticles was observed on Ag-deposited glass after the heat-treatment under the UV-irradiation at early stage. Then the absorption disappeared with the increase in the heat-treatment and UV-irradiation time.
In order to confirm the silver incorporation into the glass, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was performed. The spectra were obtained for the glass surface which was etched by Ar+ sputtering step by step. The variations of the peak positions and intensities of the signals assigned to Ag and Te were monitored with the total sputtering period. The intensity of the Ag 3d5/2 line rapidly decreased until the sputtering time of 100 seconds, then gradually decreased, and finally disappeared at the sputtering time of 720 seconds.
From these results, it was revealed that the heat-treatment under the UV-irradiation of the Ag-deposited tellurite glass induced the interaction between the deposited silver and the glass, and the deposited silver was incorporated into the glass inside.
