Thermoelectric (TE) conversion is one of promising methods for the generation of a cost-effective electric generator, and TE devices are also useful for applications in many fields, especially microelectronics devices, due to their simple device structures. TE generation using Seebeck effect requires both n-type and p-type semiconductors for the efficient conversion. Single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are emerged as the promising candidate due to their non-toxicity, processability, abundant resources together with the remarkable electrical conductivity, potentially large Seebeck coefficient and light weight.
However, due to an air oxidation, deterioration of n-type nature has been the critical issue. This time, we doped single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) film by 2-(2-methoxyphenyl)-1,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzimidazole (o-MeO-DMBI) because of the following reasons; i) o-MeO-DMBI is stable under atmospheric conditions, ii) the cationic form of o-MeO-DMBI is also stable and, iii) n-doping of the other carbon materials such as fullerene and graphene has already been reported although their air-stability has not yet been examined. In this paper, we report the air stability of the o-MeO-DMBI-doped SWNTs by monitoring the Seebeck coefficient.
