[14p-P10-93] Development of non-contact and shaft-free motor by using magnetic field and light

We have developed a non-contact and shaft-free motor which is operated by light under a magnetic field. The mechanism utilizes the change of the magnetic property of phosphorescent material, in which the electrons are excited by light irradiation, and some of the excited electrons are slid into the triplet state. Since the triplet state of electrons shows paramagnetic property, the material with the triplet electrons moves toward the position where the magnetic field is higher than the position around. Through the calculation of the magnetic field distribution (MagNet7, Infolytica), we found that the magnetic field becomes very strong around the boundary line of two magnets aligned in an anti-parallel fashion. For example, the product of magnetic field and its gradient, which is proportional to the magnetic force acting on the object, reaches hundreds of T^(2)/m. This is a surprising thing because even a superconducting magnet shows a comparable value. In our study, phosphorescent materials are placed on a thin plastic plate floating on the water surface. Ring-shaped magnets lies below the water surface, and the light is irradiated on one of the phosphorescent materials. And thus, the magnetic force pushes the excited materials to the position with the maximum field. The details are discussed in the session.
