In an attempt to identify the dominant factor(s) in plasma-induced cell membrane permeabilization toward developing highly-efficient and minimally-invasive transfection, the permeabilizing effects of the saline treated with different types of gas-liquid interfacial plasmas (gas-phase and in-liquid plasmas) are measured. The results show that the both plasma-treated saline can enhance the cell membrane permeability, but the efficiency in the case of the in-liquid plasma is 5 times larger than that in the gas-phase plasma. We discuss about this difference in terms of the reactive species generated in the plasma irradiated solution.
