Proton permeability of monolayer graphene grown on Au(111) electrode was evaluated using electrochemical Raman spectroscopy. Monolayer graphene with high crystalline structure was synthesized on Au(111) single crystal by atmospheric CVD. Raman spectroscopy was found that when potential which hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) does not occur, was applied, compressive strain in monolayer graphene was released originating from generation of hydrogen at the graphene-Au(111) interace. The results strongly indicate that protons can penetrate underlying Au surface thorough graphene.
