[16a-P1-40] Thoron Hot Spring as a Teaching Material

Ohashi Inn at Misasa has a hot spring source that contains ²²⁰Rn (Thoron). Rocks affixed to the tub exhibit thorium series gamma-spectra, in addition to weak uranium series. The pebbles and sand of this tub are available as a source of α-rays and β-rays for cloud chambers. By shaking the spring water in a polyethylene wash bottle, ²²⁰Rn and ²²²Rn gas are discharged from the vessel, and become the source of the cloud chamber. Typical V-shaped alpha tracks appear.On the other hand, we observed only daughter nucleide of ²²²Rn from the spring water. We are investigating the cause.
