In this study, we noticed one of the most typical semiconductors, Ge, which has a comparatively large exciton Bohr radius that increases the quantum confinement effect even for large nanoparticles. It has been known that bare Ge nanoparticles are readily oxidized in water and subsequently dissolved. However, a proper surfactant that can prevent the oxidation has not yet been found for Ge nanoparticles. We successfully synthesized colloidally stable and oxidation-resistant Ge nanoparticles by pulsed laser ablation of a Ge target in dilute aqueous HCl without any additional surfactants. Mechanisms for protecting the Ge nanoparticles from rapid oxidation and stabilizing colloidal suspensions were elucidated.
