We propose local and reversible manipulation technique of lipid bilayers using virtual cathode display. By irradiating an electron beam (EB) to a 100-nm-thick silicon nitride (SiN) membrane, a focused electric field can be controlled two-dimensionally, and this electric field can generate mechanical stress such as Maxwell stress and osmotic pressure. In this study, we demonstrated reversible shape transformation of a lipid tube into a chain of vesicles by EB irradiations.
