Novel solid state devices that utilize solid state ionics are attracting attention. In this presentation, the author summarizes the historical review on the fundamental research of solid state ionics and then focuses on “nanoionics” defined as the ionic functionality of local ion migration in nano-scale. Nanoionics is an essential keyword for both the future direction of solid state ionics research and the novel applications using ionic modulation. The author further discusses the solid state electrochemical properties of ion/ion and ionic/mixed ionic and electronic hetero-junction systems, which are shows unique but sometimes detrimental effect to the device functionality.
