Science and technology are said to make cyclical and spiral progress. Optical computing research, boomed in the 1980s and declined afterward, is now reviving as a new research field on optical artificial intelligence (AI). I will present a historical perspective on optical computing research based on my personal view as an old researcher who experienced the previous boom cycle and has high expectation on the emerging new field of optical AI.
