[20a-431B-10] Magnetic levitation and self-assembly of glass particles using magneto-Archimedes effect

Self-assembly of particles has been intensively studied in terms of manufacturing optical or microelectronic devises or development of low-energy fabrication techniques. Here we report a new concept of self-assembly of particles under magnetic levitation. The particles are levitated in an aqueous manganese chloride solution placed between two neodymium permanent magnets, where we made use of the principle of magneto-Archimedes levitation that we invented before. Although self-assembly using lateral meniscus force has been known for years, particles must be in the thin layer of liquid between water surface and solid/liquid interface, which causes the formation of defects in the self-assembly. In contrast, the particles levitating in a magnetic field can freely move around the potential minimum where the particles self-assemble and do not undergo any frictional force other than viscosity of liquid. Therefore, our method could enable us to obtain large-scale self-assembly of particles.
