In order to identify complex functions of cells, we have derived simple models for cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions to design and develop various new petri dish-fixed cell recognition biomaterials. E-cadherin-Fc chimera protein is one such biomaterial which exhibits Ca2+-dependent cell adhesion properties. For the purpose of investigating the correlation between its structure and function, AFM observations in liquid have been performed to reveal a morphology which was predicted from its dissociation coefficient. The results of cell culture will be also discussed.
