[21a-212A-1] Absolute distance measurement using an amplitude-modulated resonant-tunneling diode terahertz oscillator
Keywords:terahertz, resonant-tunneling diode, radar
The terahertz radiation, having the ability to penetrate paper, cloth and other materials, as well as featuring a wavelength below 1 mm, is expected to allow three-dimensional high resolution imaging based on a terahertz-wave radar principle. In this report, we applied amplitude modulation to a resonant tunneling diode terahertz oscillator and, by changing the modulation frequency, we were able to measure the propagation time difference between the path of the reference signal and that of the measurement signal. This allowed the absolute distance to be measured, and we report a successful distance measurement with an error within ± 10 mm.
