Conventional add-drop racetrack microring resonator with an intermediate tapered section has been proposed for single gold nanoparticle detection. Tapering of a waveguide reduces the effective refractive index of the mode propagating in the waveguide that gives rise to the greater evanescent electric field outside the waveguide which in turn enhances the light-matter interaction. A wavelength shift of around 4.5 nm is observed for a single gold nanoparticle of radius 50 nm. The resonance wavelength shifts with the size of the gold nanoparticle which demonstrates the size selectivity of the device. The device has been fabricated by two-photon polymerization process. The proposed device could be a potential candidate for bio-sensing applications.
